Listening And Walking

It may not be in your best interest to walk and simultaneously listen to music. Studies show that crashes inlvolving automobiles and pedestrians wearing headphones have tripled since 2004. Dr. Richard Lichenstein of the University of Maryland School of Medicine has conducted multiple studies related to this topic. From 2004 until 2005, Dr. Lichenstein's research shows 16 cases where this type of accident results in death. In 2010 and 2011 it has increased to 47. Over the years (2004-2011) there have been 116 reported crashes, and among them, 81 have resulted in death.
In our modern era, almost every street and block is filled with people wearing headphones. With that, more and more people may suffer from a loss of awareness and become distracted. This increases the rates of accidents that involve pedestrians wearing headphones.
These cases have brought attention to the lawmakers of major cities like Chicago and New York City. In Chicago, there is a law that prohibits the use of one's cell phone while on a bike. In New York City, there was a proposed law that would have banned all cell phone and MP3 usage while crossing streets. However, you should not just forget about the cell phone or MP3 player if you decide to take a walk, but instead you should increase your awareness and know your surroundings.
